Unesc is a finalist for an international sustainability award with its oncology dentistry project

Unesc is among the finalists of the 2nd International Sustainability Award Brazil – Portugal 2026, in the Social – Large Companies category, with the Extension Project Health Assistance Program: Stomatology & Supportive Oncology Dentistry. This initiative combines scientific knowledge, specialized care, and social commitment to contribute to the quality of life of patients undergoing cancer treatment.

Coordinated by Professor Anarela Bernardi Vassen, with the participation of other faculty members from the Dentistry program, the project provides specialized and humanized dental care to cancer patients in situations of social vulnerability.

The initiative encompasses the prevention and treatment of oral complications resulting from chemotherapy and radiotherapy, conditions that can compromise nutrition, well-being, and the continuity of cancer treatment. Among the resources used is low-level laser therapy, which helps relieve pain and promote tissue recovery.

In addition to clinical care, the program promotes educational and awareness actions in campaigns such as Red May and Green July, expanding access to information on prevention, diagnosis, and oral health care.

According to Gisele Silveira Coelho Lopes, the acting rector of Unesc, the nomination represents recognition of excellent work that brings the knowledge produced at the University closer to the needs of the population.

“This achievement represents the commitment of science to serve society. When science walks alongside and believes in the power of education and solidarity focused on well-being, the entire society benefits. It is the certainty that we remain steadfast in our mission as a Community University, which researches and innovates while committing to people, the environment, and the quality of life of the population,” she emphasizes.

Vanessa Moraes de Andrade, the pro-rector of Research, Graduate Studies, Innovation, and Extension, also highlights the significance of the nomination for the University. “Reaching the finals of an award like this demonstrates the strength of our Community University. This project embodies the essence of what we do, which is to transform knowledge into real impact in people's lives. It is recognition that transcends borders and shows that Unesc is prepared to engage with the world while caring for our community,” Vanessa states.

The project coordinator, Anarela, emphasizes that the initiative represents a step forward in integrating Dentistry into the comprehensive care of patients, combining the scientific training of students with humanized attention and the needs of the community. “We are taking the first steps in building an initiative that strengthens the integration of Dentistry into comprehensive health care, valuing the dignity and quality of life of patients. Our students receive training that combines scientific knowledge, clinical practice, and sensitivity to recognize the needs of each individual,” said the project coordinator.

For Anarela, as the coordinator, it is gratifying to witness the commitment of the students and their understanding of the role of Dentistry in caring for each person.

“With the support of the Dentistry program, especially from professors Morgana Guzzatti, Karoline Rossi, Renan Ceretta, and Rafael Amaral, we strengthen a humanized and socially committed education, connected to the needs of the community,” she described.

International Recognition

Promoted by the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in Brazil – Minas Gerais, the International Sustainability Award Brazil – Portugal aims to recognize and promote innovative projects, solutions, and research in the areas of sustainability and the environment.

In its second edition, the initiative seeks to encourage good practices developed by cities, companies, startups, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, and research centers from Brazil and Portugal. The award also stimulates the exchange of knowledge and technologies, societal awareness, and the strengthening of relations between the two countries.

The award ceremony is scheduled for November 5, 2026, at 7 PM, at the Dom Helder University Center in Belo Horizonte (MG).

Unesc's presence among the finalists highlights the reach of an initiative that combines academic training, university extension, and specialized assistance, putting knowledge to the service of people facing one of the most delicate moments of their lives.
