Research Lines

Discover our research lines

Pathophysiology

Studies the biological mechanisms of diseases in order to understand their onset and progression, with the aim of developing better therapeutic strategies. This line relies on preclinical, clinical, and epidemiological studies.

Neurosciences

Examines the central nervous system from a perspective that integrates basic sciences and clinical practice. It first seeks to understand the normal functioning of the brain in order to comprehend pathological processes and their treatment. In basic sciences, it relies on neurochemistry and neurophysiology, while in clinical practice, it draws on psychology, neurology, neurosurgery, and psychiatry.

Admission to the Program

Selection Process

The PPGCS issues a selection notice to form new Master's and Doctoral classes annually. The selection process for the Master's program includes three stages: application, curriculum analysis, and a knowledge exam in Health Sciences. For the Doctoral program, there are four stages: application, defense of the Descriptive Memorial, defense of the Research Project, and theoretical evaluation.

Scholarships

The PPGCS offers benefits through CAPES. There are two benefit modalities: school fees that waive tuition and full scholarships, where the student is exempt from tuition and also receives a monthly allowance. To apply for scholarships, keep an eye on the announcements.

Impact on Society

The PPGCS at Unesc, with its 20 years of existence, has always been aligned with the National Postgraduate Plan (PNPG), being recognized among the few programs, within the 14%, in the field of Health Sciences, and among the 7% of all postgraduate programs recognized by CAPES, achieving the highest level of excellence, concept 7, obtained in the last four-year evaluation by CAPES. Furthermore, both scores from the previous four-year periods demonstrate that PPGCS has a consolidated trajectory, with consecutive evaluations scoring 6 or 7. As a result, this represents the high intellectual, technical, scientific, and technological capacity of researchers and students, as well as social and economic impacts. A PPGCS with concept 7 offers high-level training, with highly qualified graduates. This positively impacts various sectors of society in which these professionals are integrated, contributing to development in strategic areas. The impact of the insertion of the excellence postgraduate program for regional socioeconomic development, and its impacts in other regions of the country, through its strategic actions and partnerships, such as the Minter and Dinter modalities consolidated in different universities in southeastern and central-western Brazil. The research and technological development of PPGCS are aligned with social needs and challenges, both regarding regional and national challenges in Santa Catarina. This results in practical solutions to local and global problems, concerning research related to COVID-19 led by our researchers, from clinical studies on vaccine efficacy during the pandemic, to diagnostic tools and the impact on physical and mental health, contributing to the advancement of society as a whole.

Internationalization

The PPGCS demonstrates high-quality scientific production, significantly contributing to the advancement of knowledge in its research lines and related areas, as evidenced by the partnerships established between researchers from the graduate programs in materials science and engineering and environmental sciences. This highlights the multidisciplinary capacity of the program. Academic excellence is further supported by collaborations and partnerships with international institutions and researchers, effectively promoting the internationalization of science.
