The Graduate Program in Materials Science and Engineering (PPGCEM) – Master's and Doctoral degrees, at the Universidade do Extremo Sul Catarinense (UNESC), is aimed at professionals and managers with higher education qualifications who work or intend to work in the areas of engineering and technologies related to the field of materials.
Materials are essential and strategic elements for the technological, economic, and sustainable development of a society and are integrated into various areas of knowledge. The demand for new materials that meet increasingly diverse requirements is growing and, to this end, it is essential to train new professionals who are able to work with excellence in this segment.
The Graduate Program in Materials Science and Engineering (PPGCEM) arose from the regional need to train human resources in the field of materials, since the southern region of Santa Catarina, in addition to concentrating a diversified industrial park in the mining, ceramics, polymers and metallurgy sectors, is increasingly investing in innovation and new technologies.
In this regard, this Master’s and Doctoral Program deepens and mobilizes professionals to engage in internationalized research and teaching, promoting sustainability, innovation, and regional development linked to the productive and technological sectors. PPGCEM is an important space for both workforce training and scientific development and innovation, particularly in terms of production processes, and the development and characterization of materials.
To train qualified Masters and Doctors in Materials Science and Engineering to work in internationalized research and teaching, promoting sustainability, innovation, and regional development. +
The specific objectives are:
- to qualify professionals working in companies, enabling their continuous updating in the technological sector of southern Santa Catarina;
- to implement alternatives for solving existing technological problems related to material processing, contributing to economic growth and strengthening the region technology policies;
- to develop the ability to produce technically viable and environmentally correct solutions for the waste generated in the region, with a particular focus on waste valorization.
Graduates should be able to:
- qualify for teaching at the high school, technical, and higher education levels;
- be skilled in the synthesis, processing, application, characterization, and reuse of materials;
- develop the ability to innovate with a focus on sustainability in the development and application of materials.

Development and Processing of Materials
This initiative aims to:
- identify new business opportunities and encourage entrepreneurial practices related to environmental issues, using waste valorization tools;
- contribute to the implementation of measures that enhance the competitiveness of companies, typically through the use of quality and environmental systems, promoting sustainable development.
Specific objectives include:
- inerting industrial waste by using it in the production of glass and glass-ceramic artifacts;
- developing materials with suitable properties for use as inputs, replacing the use of natural raw materials for the chemical industry and materials from waste;
- improving processing techniques for polymers and composite materials containing waste in their composition;
- assessing potential ecotoxicological and genotoxic effects of materials produced from waste;
- developing recycled materials with suitable properties for use in civil construction.
This research line has the following general objectives:
- to investigate new raw materials or identify alternative raw materials for industrial use;
- to develop new technologies and/or improve existing ones for material processing, aiming to increase productive performance;
- to investigate the most relevant factors of a specific manufacturing process, correlating them with the final properties of the products, seeking continuous development, optimization, and enhancement of the process.
The specific objectives of this line are:
- to investigate new compositions and processing methods that allow for the optimization of final properties and reduce the use of raw materials and energy in the manufacturing of products for civil construction (ceramic coatings, tiles, bricks, and glazes, among others);
- development of advanced ceramics with antimicrobial properties;
- development of special glasses, glass-ceramics, and bioceramics for applications in the fields of dentistry, biotechnology, microelectronics, ballistics, wear-resistant coatings, among others;
- synthesis and characterization of conductive, semiconductive, piezoelectric, and magnetic polymeric materials;
- development of polymers with bactericidal and/or fungicidal properties for application in sensors, biosensors, photovoltaic systems, and medical-hospital devices;
- synthesis and characterization of polymeric membranes for use in fuel cells;
- preparation of polymer matrix nanocomposites via incorporation of metallic nanoparticles;
- evaluation and optimization of composition and processing parameters in the production of polymeric materials and polymer matrix composites;
- assessment of potential genotoxic and/or cytotoxic damage caused by chemical agents involved in an industrial process.
