The students in the 8th semester of the Architecture and Urbanism program conducted a field trip in the São Francisco neighborhood of Criciúma. This practical activity was part of the Critical Analysis of Urbanism course, taught by Professor Rubia Carminatti. During the technical visit on September 18, the class explored the main streets of the area to observe the infrastructural demands faced daily by residents.
This initiative is part of the preparation for the third assessment of the course, developed under the Extension curricularization model of the University.
"The proposal is to analyze a street in the neighborhood and suggest improvements based on the principles of New Urbanism, urban legislation, and the concept of Complete Streets," explains Rubia Carminatti.
For the execution of the project, the students were organized into four structured working groups. Each team will be responsible for identifying and documenting local issues, diagnosing obstacles related to urban mobility, accessibility, road safety, environmental comfort, and the overall quality of public areas in the neighborhood.
After mapping, the teams will correlate the deficiencies found with the current urban legislation to develop viable solutions. The urban intervention proposals will focus on harmonious coexistence among pedestrians, cyclists, public transport, and motor vehicles, integrating complementary projects for landscaping, stormwater drainage, furniture, and lighting.
"In the end, they will present the diagnosis and proposals in a slide format, including photos, intervention guidelines, and a summary table with goals and expected benefits. With the completion of this activity, future architects and urban planners will exercise a critical and humanized perspective on city planning," states the professor.
