The election changes the routine of a newsroom. Information arrives at high speed, the reporting must keep pace with the unfolding events, and every published data requires verification. For over 40 students from the School of Communication Criciúma (EcoCria) at Unesc, this environment also represents an opportunity to transform the knowledge absorbed in the classroom and laboratories into professional experience.
This Sunday (10/4), Journalism students from the University participate in the electoral coverage alongside professionals from the Unesc Communication Agency (Agecom), Rádio Som Maior, and the portal 4oito. This activity bridges university education with the demands present in the daily journalistic routine.
According to the acting rector of Unesc, Gisele Silveira Coelho Lopes, the electoral coverage enhances academic experience by placing students in a concrete work situation. "We understand this activity as a space for professional training and service to society. For our students, participating in this process means experiencing, in practice, the challenges of journalism at a time when the accuracy of information, reporting, and journalistic responsibility are fundamental," she states.
The special coverage of the elections begins at 7 AM and continues throughout the day, with students and professionals spread across the main voting locations in Criciúma. The partnership brings students closer to the professional routine. Throughout the day, they follow editorial decisions, reporting processes, and content production in a work marked by the speed of information and the need for verification.
"Our commitment is to contribute to coverage based on information, verification, and a plurality of voices, helping voters understand the electoral process and the events of election day. At the same time, we want this experience to leave an important lesson for future journalists: that doing journalism during an election requires technique, responsibility, ethics, and a commitment to information," emphasizes the coordinator of EcoCria, Marcos Dalmoro.
The special coverage also highlights fundamental principles of journalistic activity such as verification, plurality, and responsibility. "Covering an election is providing a service to the voter. Informing with reporting, context, and neutrality, so that each person can decide based on facts. This work becomes stronger when done in partnership, and that is what the teams from Som Maior, 4oito, and Unesc deliver together, combining the agility of radio with the production and training of the University," emphasizes the general director of Rádio Som Maior, Adelor Lessa.
