The outdoor area in front of the Unesc Integrated Clinics was the stage for a community mobilization focused on awareness and prevention of breast cancer this Monday (10/19). The event was organized by the academic leagues of Mastology (Lamasto) and Plastic Surgery (Lacipla), in partnership with the Directorate of Extension, Culture, and Community Actions (Dirext).
The goal was to guide the population on prevention, recognition of signs and symptoms, risk factors, and the importance of seeking health services in a timely manner, as well as to increase access to reliable information and encourage health-promoting habits.
According to medical student Yara de Oliveira, the initiative prioritized guidance on screening. This year, the recommended age range for screening has been expanded, and mammography, available through the Unified Health System (SUS), is indicated for women aged 40 to 74. For those aged 50 to 74, the exam should be performed every two years.
“Not every lump is cancer, but evaluation is essential, which is why we are here to provide guidance. We have a brochure with information, as well as guidance on lumps and consistency. We want to raise awareness among women to seek health clinics and undergo screening mammography,” says Yara.
Simultaneously, at the Integrated Clinics, the Psychology and Nutrition courses held a Q&A session addressing breast cancer and other experiences, which will continue until Thursday (10/22). Participants received lollipops and hibiscus tea, and had the opportunity to take photos with a decorated mirror to capture the moment.
"Hibiscus tea is important for overall health and also for women's health because it is rich in antioxidants, a source of vitamins, and has anti-inflammatory properties, in addition to its color, which is reminiscent of Pink October,” emphasizes Nutrition student Millena Veneranto de Resende.
The initiative also distributed brochures on women's mental health, including signs, prevention methods, and the support that Psychology can offer. “I believe that the main objective of today's action is self-care: to encourage women to take care of themselves and to show the importance of this,” highlighted Psychology student Tuane Trento Santana.
