The auditorium Ruy Hülse at Unesc was filled with excitement on the evening of this Monday (September 28). Freshmen, seniors, professors, and administrators from the Nursing program participated in the opening class, marked by integration, welcome, and reflections on the different paths the profession can offer.
Before the main lecture, the presentation of academic leagues and the athletic association engaged the students and showcased a bit of the diverse experiences that are part of university education. The program also included participation from representatives of the course and the Academic Center, as well as a special moment for students beginning their journey in higher education.
One of the highlights of the evening was the lecture "How Nursing Prepared Me for Health Management," delivered by Professor Denise Maccarini Tereza. Drawing from her own professional experience, she addressed topics such as management, leadership, ethics, and integrity, demonstrating how the knowledge developed in Nursing can contribute to various fields of practice.
When discussing management, the professor emphasized that management and leadership go hand in hand. "Management trains the team, and leadership awakens potential. In health management, the two are inseparable," she stated.
For Denise, leading is not necessarily related to holding a managerial position. "Leadership is a choice, not a title. Those who care lead, with or without a title," she pointed out.
Ethics was also among the topics discussed. According to the speaker, professional practice requires coherence between what one does and what one demonstrates. "It's not enough to be; you have to appear. Omission destroys authority and compromises patient safety," she asserted.
The Vice-Rector for Administration and Finance at Unesc, José Otávio Feltrin, also shared a bit of his own journey with the students. A trained nurse, he spoke about the challenges that arise throughout a career and reminded them that education prepares professionals to deal with unexpected situations as well.
"Don't worry about the surprises. I didn't stop being a nurse and I faced many surprises in my life, especially in the positions I held. You will too. But you will be prepared to face those moments. When a challenge arises, take a deep breath and think, 'I learned this in Nursing.' And if I don't know, I will ask someone who does," he emphasized.
The assistant coordinator of the course, Ioná Vieira Bez Birolo, encouraged the students to take advantage of every opportunity during their studies. For her, the university journey is also made up of situations that cannot always be predicted.
"Many things catch us by surprise. Sometimes it's planned, other times it appears suddenly. Embrace it and make this achievement the best you can," she stressed.
The Director of In-Person Education, Gislene Camargo, also participated in the program.
Alumnus Gabriel Savi Mondo returned to the University to share with the students a bit of the experience he had during his studies and left a message of encouragement for those starting their academic journey.
The president of the Academic Center, Mayra Santos, spoke about the responsibility of representing the students. She mentioned that she never imagined reaching the position she currently holds and thanked the administration for their partnership in seeking improvements for the students.
"Studying is an act of rebellion in this era of so much information. Study and seek knowledge. Being rebellious is good because what you study brings benefits to those around you," she stated.
The program was also marked by the White Coat Ceremony, held for first-semester students in the course. This moment represents one of the first rites of passage in Nursing education and symbolizes the commitment that accompanies students from the beginning of their studies.
With their white coats on and in front of professors, family, and peers, the students participated in the oath, symbolically committing to ethics, responsibility, and care for life.
